Not at all. Here’s something I saw one bride do.  She had a lovely dress for the wedding. Gorgeous lace bodice and magnificent full skirt with a sweep train.  After the cake cutting, she and the groom left for a few moments. When they returned, the band played whatever their "entrance" song was and the bride was now wearing a mini-dress. The bodice was actually just the top part of a entire dress which came a few inches above the knee. The full skirt/train was an entirely separate piece which she removed. She was able to dance the night away without tripping on a thing. Hope this helps, Noe

I just bought my dress and I totally understand where you’re coming from.  I really didn’t like the white bridesmaids dresses because they were too plain.  However, the dress I bought was a light-weight material, very elegant, small train that is easy to bustle (or can be removed in alterations).  It was an Pallas Athenas gown and their website is www.lotusorient.com.  Their website photos really don’t do the dresses any justice because they’re so small and don’t capture the details.  But there is a store finder on the website and the ones I looked at were pretty reasonably priced.  I got mine for $600. The dress I got is a v-neck/v-back gown with very small crystal and pearl beads sprinkling the dress and crystal beadwork along the neckline and hem. (All hand-sewn!)  I’m not much for beads or sequins, but the ones I saw were very simple and elegant and most of the beads were dainty.  The dress I got was considered an "informal" gown, but could very easily be dressed to an informal or formal wedding depending on your accessosries. It sounds fine, also look for "informal" gowns…many of them don’t have a train.  Another option is looking for a dress that has a detachable train.  The train usually snaps in around the waist to drag behind during the ceremony, and then can be removed during the reception. Another thing to consider is what you think will make it hard to move in… A long piece of fabric dragging behind you? A huge poofy skirt, that affects sitting and rest room trips? A skin tight bodice, that might not allow the full movement you have in "regular" clothes for siting, bending and reaching? When you try in gowns, be sure to try walking and sitting in them. I tried on my "test" gown last weekend, for a final fitting, and it only has a 6 in train, but it requires me to walk a little different.  It’s workable, but something I wouldn’t of noticed if I didn’t stop to go get something from the other room.     Standing in front of a mirror is one thing…moving is another. in hind site, I may have done that.. I had a dress with a detachable train, which was nice, but it was still very heavy for dancing. We did a few ballroom dances that were choreographed asnd it would have been nicer if it was lighter. My suggestions would be to -go with a chiffon material- much lighter than satin; and go for a slightly shorter length than floor length- maybe so just the tips of your toes show.. The big dresses are nice, but if you aren’t used to wearing them (who is??) they are pretty heavy, not to mention very hot! Good Luck! Not all formal gowns have trains.  Mine was formal (pearl beads and sequens on the bodice, spaghetti straps and a huge, tulle skirt with some beads and sequens) but didn’t have a train.  I’m a clutz and didn’t want to trip. There are plenty of wedding dresses that are comfortable and don’t have a train.  Plus, if you find one with a train, it’s not that hard to remove it. However, dancing with a hoop is a bit more difficult so I’d recommend avoiding it. — Melissa 3/18/01

Interesting. Well, in the garment industry a sample is just that, a sample of the dress, sometimes the fabric is a little different, or the stitching is not quite the same. Most shops in this area have just one sample of every dress. They are often happy to part with the sample, because then they can order a new one. Most sales reps (and that’s what bridal shops are, btw) get the samples at about 80% off retail, sometimes the discount is even better. So, even selling the gown at 50% off retail, they make money. I am not sure I would define a sample dress as one that has never been tried on, or one that comes in different sizes. Most garment industry samples come in sample size 10 for women, sometimes 12.  If a dress shop has several different sizes of the same dress, it isn’t a sample….That just sounds like an off the rack dress. Jenna– Your comments about samples were well-taken. Perhaps I can clarify what I said in the second paragraph. The retailers I worked with ordered "sample" gowns in 8, 10 or 12, just as you mentioned, although I wouldn’t have said that they were different in any detailling from the "real" ordered gown they represented. So perhaps they were not "designer samples" in the true sense, merely samples of available, orderable gowns. What I was trying, (obviously not too sucessfully <giggle> ) to say after that about "sizing to fit" was this… No discount was given when these gowns were sold off-rack fairly quickly (meaning they were still in good condition, had not been soiled or damaged from lots of trying on) because that size 10 (or whatever) gown would be exactly the same  (size and details) as an *ordered* size 10 gown. I only wanted to remind posters that ordering a gown only gets you a new, un-manhandled version of the gown you saw in whatever size you order– not a custom fit, or anything. So the only reason for a discount at those stores would be for a "sample" which was shop-worn or unavailable to order. *But this thread brings up a good point for brides going shopping*. Perhaps it would be wise to clarify with each boutique owner whether the "samples" are true designer samples (prototypes) or an actual "gown # whatever" ordered for the purpose of example/trying on (exactly the same as what you would order) As for the profit the "rep" gets for selling the sample, I guess the retailers I’ve seen are greedier, because the only 50% discounts I ever saw were on gowns that were soiled and had the beading and appliqu

I think you may have misunderstood what David’s Bridal is. It’s a warehouse store. *All* of the bridal gowns are available to be tried-on and bought immediately. There are no "samples" as such. You try on gowns until you find one you want, and then you buy it and take it home. As for the dresses being very much beat-up, that’s not necessarily so. My gown wasn’t beat up at all. Of the dozen or so dresses I tried on at David’s Bridal, only one had any damage, and the damage was clearly noted on the tag, which showed a significant markdown. The $99 dresses are loss leaders. There aren’t very many of them. However, there will be other dresses on sale, and there’s usually a "close-out wall" even when no sale is advertised. Personally, I would not advise going to a DB $99 sale on a weekend because it will be a mad house — if you want to go to the sale, take a very early or very late lunch so you can go during a quieter time on a weekday. I went to David’s Bridal, although I am not using there alterations. They are extremely expensive.  I paid about 800 and had my fiance’s sister look it over…we noticed the lining on the tulle, but his mom said tulle usually isn’t lined.  I have heard good and bad as well.  Think of it this way…you can have a good OR bad experience ANYWHERE.  Just ask the right questions, and you’ll be set. Here in OKC, I went into one of the stores and tried to ask a couple of questions, but snobbily they replied that they cannot help me unless I have an appointment.  This was my first stop to look for dresses and I wondered what I was in for.  Thank goodness I’ve found other shops in the area that actually care about customer service. I purchased my wedding dress in NJ at David’s Bridal.  I had the dress altered there as well.  The sales people did appear to be involved with more than one customer at a time, but face it, it’s a department store for wedding dresses.  That would be typical.  I didn’t really mind, I had my mother and my MOH with me and after she showed us where my size was, and made a few suggestions, we started on our own.  I actually preferred that. Who wants a person who has no clue what your style is, telling you what you look great in.  I look good in a lot of things but it doesn’t mean that they are my style or that I feel comfortable in them. Plus I had lots of requirements. I didn’t want a dress that cost more than $400.  I think I ended up with one that cost $750 because I just liked it better than any of the others and it felt and looked great on me.  I think my alterations were about $140-160, but I got the hemline raised and a french bustle put in rather than the regular style.  I did not get any other alternations to the bust, straps or waist.  Just another viewpoint, YMMV.

Most people would tel you to stay as far away as possible from David’s Bridal.  They have no clue what they are doing, I know people who have bought dresses and found out that they were used and dirty but were sold as new.  My wife bought the bridesmaid’s dresses there and it went relatively well but she would never go there for the actual wedding dress. Joe, We are not in the business of weddings like David’s Bridal and you. We have never purchased a wedding dress before. We had no reason not to trust them until they gave us one. We trusted that the alterations would cost around $15 because this was what we were told by their representative.  We trusted that the dress wouldn’t need to be hemmed if my daughter bought 3" heels because this was also what we were told by their representative. So we purchased the dress. Unfortunately, now we are at their mercy. There was a month between the day we bought the dress & the fitting when we learned the alterations were going to be $390 instead of the $15. We had to wait until they ordered another dress because the one in the store was in such bad shape. We believe there should have been full disclosure about the high alteration cost before we purchased the dress, not a month after.

I think a major point is that just because you buy a dress from a company, you don’t need to get it altered there. If your daughter loved the dress, and it arrived in great condition, then pay for the dress and leave the store and go get it altered somewhere reputable.  Large cities have listings of tailors and seamstresses, small towns have word-of-mouth, and you can even check with area college/university/high school drama groups for references.  If you were told the changes would cost $15 and they suddenly gave you a bill for $400+ after the services were done, you need to make the choice to either give your money to someplace that — at best– has really bad customer service communications, or at worse is usurous, or to walk out without paying and take them to small claims court — which would be difficult if the first salesperson didn’t put the low price in writing.

How was this forseeable?  When my daughter tried on her dress she was told by the sales clerk, Kathy, that there would only be $15 alterations for the straps & the hem wouldn’t need adjustment.  There was no disclosure on the costs of alterations & we were given false information by the sales clerk.  We certainly would have walked out of the store and bought the dress somewhere else if we were given the truth!!  You are right, we were ignorant in believing that we were walking into a reputable store.

This is info from the clerk at JC Penny’s this evening — I was there looking for dresses,myself. Also, if you’re looking for a more traditional dress, try David’s Bridals. They have a web site and are currently having a huge sale. Actually, I’m told that David’s Bridals has a sale every 3 weeks.

Andrea,     You may have better luck going to the store itself. I registered with JCPenny online and every week I was getting a letter from them telling me that one of the items I had chosen on my registry was discontinued. I went ahead and registered elsewhere so I wouldn’t have to be updating every week. I’m afraid the same thing might happen if you try looking online with them for a dress.     I think you said you were in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. Forest green is a very popular and easy-to-find color for attendant dresses. And it’s easy to coordinate with just about any other color.  If you use green as your primary color, and you plan to have flowers, there will obviously be at least one other color involved since flowers don’t generally come in forest green!  In order to choose something that will work well with your reception location, consider the colors of the walls, floorings, furnishings, etc. in the hall.  Don’t know what you mean by "indoors but in a nature setting" unless you’re talking about an adjacent garden or the like; if that’s the case, ask what will be in bloom at the time of your reception and work with that. If you’d like to use something that "says spring" try lilac, a buttery or brighter yellow, periwinkle, rose, or crisp white (or any combination thereof) all of which will look very nice against dark green.  You could also use a tonal mix of greens, though here again you’d probably need to choose *something* else for the predominant flower color.  (Perhaps white or cream, whichever is the color of your gown.  Forest, sage and cream could be very elegant and very vernal.) A more dramatic possibility would be bright orange or fuschia (think tropical flowers).  A bright "wildflower" mix like orange, yellow and purple can look great too but tends to look more summery; a mix of pinks and/or purples could be a more springlike version of the same look.  Navy or burgundy work well with forest but may seem too autumnal; the addition of lots of white could make it work. You have lots of possibilities, so choose based on what you think will look best with the reception hall’s existing color scheme.  If you really don’t know where to start, try looking for a print fabric or piece of artwork (it could be something that’s in the reception hall or something you have) or even a giftwrap design, book illustration, calendar photo or china pattern that includes the green you like, and consider copying the color combination from that.         Pretty much *any* color goes with green (think flowers). If you don’t have anything else that inclines you in one direction or another, go looking for bridesmaids’ dresses.  It’s likely that any dress you find that you and all the ‘maids love will only come in, say, half a dozen colors.  Pick one of those and another that will complement it.  If you settle on a color before shopping for dresses (given that you want one of the colors to be suitable for the dresses), you may well find that dresses just aren’t available in that color this season.  You can save yourself some headaches by finding the dress first, or at least finding out what colors are popular this season.  You might also consider what colors will be reasonably flattering (or at least not deadly) on your bridesmaids.  That might also help narrow the list of choices. Ok this man wants to make sure the bridesmaids in his wedding look nice. Not like hookers and not in huge fluffy dresses that look awful. After all she never said that he wants to PLAN the whole wedding and not let her have any say in anything. That is abusive and controlling. My new husband wanted some say in our wedding. He had been married once before and basically she told him when to show up. That was all. He never had any say in where they got married, by whom or anything else. All he really did in ours was pick out the ring (which is usual,), decide where we were going to get married and make me stick with silk peach roses (and I am glad I did) that’s really not so much. Often most of the wedding details turn out to be the bride’s territory; but I think this is generally because most grooms don’t care that much (or they don’t feel they have the "right" to have an opinion). "Dictate" is kind of a strong word.  If he’s got strong feelings about colors and styles and wants his feelings taken into account, fine.  If he wants to make unilateral decisions instead of sitting down with you so the two of you can work out something you’d BOTH like – well, let’s just say that wedding planning is only the firsst of a lot of joint projects the two of you will undertake, and you might want to consider whether this kind of attitude is something you really want to put up with. On the Paradise last March (also Carnival), I did see a ton of girls in prom gowns and bridesmaid dresses (it’s great that they can get double usage out of them, for the amount of money they cost!!!!). A nicer sun dress would be fine (when I think of my sun dresses, I think of my casual cotton floral type thing, which I wear with flipflops – they’d be hard to dress up), or a skirt and sweater or something. Lots of dressed up people on Paradise, and some not too dressed up at all. For one formal night, I wore a short, sleeveless black dress which has a little sparkle on it, in the bodice area. On the other night, I wore some dressy black (palazzo???) pants of a gauzy, silky, drapey fabric, with a sparkly top. I have a great long black dress (gown?) that I wore to a black tie wedding, but that was about 15 lbs. ago – maybe it’ll fit again for my next cruise that has formal nights (next cruise is on a Windjammer – I don’t think they’ll even allow formal wear tobe brought onto the boat). There were (surprisingly) a lot of tuxes, but suits are fine, too. Lee

I’m having a cathedral wedding, and these styles won’t do for both modesty and weather reasons (way too cold in January for spaghetti straps!). My question is… what is the absolute latest I can wait to make a final decision on the dress? I’m hoping if I can hold out a little longer, I’ll have more ‘wintery’ styles to choose from. My wedding is in January also, but it will be in sunny Puerto Rico so weather is no concern I’ve been looking for a while also, because I gave myself until the end of this month to find the dresses. Most places have told me that it takes about 3mo. to deliver the dresses, and you must allow about a month for fittings. A friend of mine is in a catholic wedding also and they’re using "mother of the bride" dresses with a jacket; maybe this would work for you too. They bought it at Lords and Taylors. I guess department stores (Sears, JCPenney, Lords and Taylors…) take less time to deliver. You may also search in bridesave.com for bridesmaid dresses with sleeves. Hope this helps, Karen

Most bridal shops start receiving their Winter samples in August so you might call around to see who is getting them in now. But don’t hold your breath thinking that you might find dresses with sleeves. I’m disgusted that for the past few years there has been little available in the way of stylish attendant attire that wasn’t skimpy. I think the industry has their heads up their butts on this issue. As an alternative, you could do what a good friend of mine did, and it was phenom. She had her BM’s purchase a ballgown style skirt in ivoryr taffeta, and then she gifted them with cream colored angora sweater sets from Macy’s that she got on sale. The shells were sleeveless and they looked great on the dance floor, but for the wedding they wore the long sleeved sweater with their sleeves shoved up slightly to show off the red rose bouquets. It was really pretty. Sometimes you gotta think out of the box. *grin* Ellen
