How to dress on formal evenings?
Question:
My wife and I are going on our first cruise on the Star Princess in July from Seward to Vancouver. I just found out that there are certain evenings where formal dress is encouraged. What exactly are they talking about for men? Tuxedos, dark suits, etc.? I’m not much into wearing ties myself. Thanks.
Response:
On most formal nights at least a dark suit for men is ok. Some wear a tux. I do because I own one. Ladies wear formal dresses and some wear gowns. But each cruise line is a little bit different. Check with your TA about your ship or I am sure someone else who has sailed her, in this group will be answering you. Happy Cruisin’ Mark Home Port: Monmouth County,NJ.

I would encourage you to rent a tux and wear it. You might find that you enjoy being a real participant in a luxury gala. I would estimate about half the men on Princess to Alaska will be in tuxes, the rest in dark suits. IMHO it is very inconsiderate of your fellow passengers to show up in anything less than a nice suit. — Mason Barge "People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like." — Abraham Lincoln
Response:
I bought a tux (adjustable waist, just in case) and my wife bought some formal gowns but not a necessity. Yuo can geta tux with all the trimmings for less than $200. and you are dressed for life on formal mights. Women have it a lot tougher. Roger

Having just been on the Star on May 4-11, most of the men wore tuxedos and black or dark suits for formal night. The second formal night did not seem quite as formal as the first and there were a few more suits and ties than tux. If you do not own or want to buy a tux, rent one from Princess or wear a black suit with bow tie. You can always have use for a black suit if you never cruise again~But I am sure you will be "hooked" for life once you take that cruise on the Star Princess! It is a beautiful ship! Be sure to give us at least a short review after you return ~~ it is especially interesting and fun to read about a cruise experience from a first time cruiser! Have a safe and happy cruise! Jean

Dennis, I certainly dont care what other women are wearing. formal nights, let alone worry about the other ladies
Response:
I have nothing along the shimmery or sequined line of clothing. And don’t want to buy a pricey outfit which I’ll never wear again, for just one or 2 nights. Is a dress like one’d wear to a wedding – like a georgette dress, okay? Or not? If not, then I’ll find alternative dining on the dressy – formal – dinner evenings. Cathy Yes, it is. On the Senasation I saw everything from simple everyday pants suit outfits to shimmery/sequined ones. Saw a few halter type Sun Dresses too. One woman at the next table had a black suit with a very bright yellow silky blouse hiding under it. Looked fit and proper to me. No one said a thing about the sun dress or the black suit. Only reason I brought my shimmery/sequined jacket and black pants was because my husband wanted to get some formal type pictures taken. He has his own tux. So go with what you like, forget about what others are thinking. :-) Kathie Kate GGC2002 – Sensation

Okay, thanks. :-) My TA said a dress one’d wear to wedding would be fine, but after reading a bunch of posts about formal evenings here on the ng, I was beginning to wonder. Cathy — "Staccato signals of constant information…" ("The Boy in the Bubble") Paul Simon

Cathy, Keep in mind that the cruises to Bermuda are more casual then most. You should be fine with the dress mentioned below, no need for alternative dining. I’ve only been on one cruise so far with another planned, so I’m not trying to put myself out as an expert. But on the Western Caribbean trip, we saw a wide variety of styles, some of which I think were fine for a "formal" evening and some not. For example, a short cotton sundress and flip flops is in no way formal to me. Neither is a Sunday church dress. But outfits like dressy black pants and a silk or satin blouse looked fine to me, without really being "formal wear." I wore a crinkled embroidered rayon dress and jacket (mid-calf length) one night, and a long black cotton knit skirt with a black twinset with some ivory beading on the other formal night. Neither was Dynasty-style glitz, but I think they fit in fine. Something you’d wear to a wedding is probably fine, too … unless it’s a leftover Pepto-Bismol pink bridesmaid dress with a giant bow on the butt. <grin> Susan in Austin

I’m not a big suit-and-tie lover either (I wear one once or twice a month when I really need to for work), but to please my wife I got in to the dress-up-for-the-evening thing, and I’m glad I did. She bought two gowns (we had 2 formal nites on our 7-nite cruise) and I have to admit it was kind of neat to stroll about in a tux, sipping a manhattan at the captain’s cocktail hour, my wife at my side in her little black dress. Given my tight-with-a-buck Irish heritage, I confess to buying a tuxedo on e-bay for 40 bucks that looked like new, and another 20 for the shirt/tie-cummerbund package. Go ahead and splurge, you’ll be glad you did.

Men’s stores that handles tux’s often have those formal shirts that don’t require a tie. That’s always an option. Add one of those shirts to either a tux or black suit and no need for a tie. Here’s a pic, you will need to enter the whole URL if it wraps to 2 or more lines. http://www.buy4lesstuxedo.com/cgi-bin/ws20/ws20_01442/main/browse.cgi… I have one of the shirts and it’s very comfortable. –Tom – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > My wife and I are going on our first cruise on the Star Princess in July > from Seward to Vancouver. It is always dangerous to talk about an entire gender, such as "men" LOL. If I go to the trouble to dress up (and I do), I care what other men are wearing. I feel a tad bit, I don’t know, pissed off about a guy in a sports jacket and bolo tie on formal night. — Mason Barge "People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like." — Abraham Lincoln

That looks awfull. IMHO — Charles

Then, Mason, you would have been very unhappy with our tablemate on Sovereign who whore Khakis and a polo shirt on formal night. It was a step up, though, since he wore shorts and T-shirts the other two nights. My husband and I had gotten all dressed up, and didn’t let it bother us, but he definitely did not "get" the dress code thing. Julie

Cathy, I, too, have seen just about everything on formal nights. Sometimes you see ladies dressed in pretty suits like one would wear to church, and then you turn and see a strapless evening gown. Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Sometimes I wear sparkles, and sometimes I go much simpler. Just have fun!! June

You apparently don’t have to iron it!! Anything with polyester is easier to press with all those pleats.
Ed prefers the feeling of the material and has not complained of it being any warmer than his cotton shirts. Jean

The shirts with the band collar look really good in person, not great in the picture. When my daughter got married, almost two yrs ago, the men all wore grey tails and shirts with the band collar. They all looked very sharp!! Sue
